Playing in a new, hybrid position, Ronald Powell was one of the standouts of Florida’s spring game. The sophomore was the the top-rated prospect in the country in the class of 2010 and played at defensive end as a freshman.
New coach Will Muschamp and defensive coordinator Dan Quinn have put him in the buck position, a hybrid of end and linebacker that gives Powell more opportunities to freelance. For his part, Powell said he likes the change.
Rivals.com’s Tom Dienhart named Powell to his All-Spring Team after the sophomore made an impression at the position coaches made for him. From Dienhart’s story:
E Ronald Powell, Florida. Powell was a five-star recruit and the No. 1-rated player in the nation in the 2010 recruiting class. He played end and outside linebacker last season, and in Florida’s new defensive scheme, Powell will play the “buck” position – a hybrid end/linebacker – for coordinator Dan Quinn. Powell, a 6-4, 248-pound sophomore, showed athletic ability and playmaking skills in the new spot this spring.
