Hurricane Isaac forces Texas A&M to postpone season-opener

Texas A&M’s season-opener against Louisiana Tech scheduled Thursday night at the Independence Bowl in Shreveport, La., was postponed until Oct. 13 due to the impact of Hurricane Isaac on the region.

The decision to move the game to a later date means that Florida’s visit to College Station on Sept. 8 will be the season-opener for the Aggies. The Gators open the season Saturday at home against Bowling Green.

It will also be the SEC opener for both teams as well.

Officials made the decision to postpone the game Tuesday afternoon after monitoring the path of the storm and consulting with numerous national and regional agencies.

“Our primary concern was for the health and safety of the general public, students and fans of both institutions,” Louisiana Tech athletic director Bruce Van De Velde said. “It’s impossible to predict exactly what is going to happen throughout the state so we also wanted to be conscientious of the possible effects of his storm on residents throughout Louisiana.”

Both universities had an open date on Oct. 13 and kickoff will be announced at a later date.
