Gators Will Be Bowl-Eligible After Beating Furman

After all those seasons competing for a spot in the BCS Championship Game, it seems a little strange to be celebrating that Florida will become bowl eligible if they beat Furman tomorrow.

It will not be a glamorous bowl either, they don’t go to teams with a 5-5 record. Instead Florida is looking at either the Gator Bowl In Jacksonville or Music City Bowl in Nashville.

One of the benefits of going to a bowl game is that in addition to the usual perks, schools get an additional 15 practices. For a team as young as Florida’s those additional practices are invaluable and will give the team a jumpstart on its spring program.

Gators coach Will Muschamp said that the added practices would help his team’s growth. He said the added practices allow players to familiarize themselves with the scheme. At least four practice days are devoted completely to fundamentals, which Florida has struggled with all year. Another few are spent on the game plan for the opponent before a break for Christmas and four or five more good days of work.

“In essence, it’s another spring ball,” Muschamp said. “It’s no question that it’s very beneficial for your program.”
