Andy Katz of ESPN is reporting that the Gators will play the Georgetown Hoyas as part of the 2012 Carrier Classic.
The game will take place on an unknown aircraft carrier off the coast of Jacksonville, Fla. on Nov. 9. The Gators will play in the third game of the day, with the prior games taking place on other carriers across the nation.
The Classic is seeking to become a permanent fixture in college basketball tradition in only its second year. A certain patriotic feel will be felt during the game as it will take place with the backdrop of Veterans Day in a highly populated naval town such as Jacksonville.
The game will open what looks to be a tough non-conference slate for the Gators in 2012. Despite playing Georgetown in Jacksonville the Gators also have trips to Arizona, Florida State, and Kansas State (Kansas City), as well as home games against Marquette and Wisconsin.
Billy Donovan has been known in the past for scheduling a daunting non-conference road in hopes of toughening up his team for SEC and tournament play. Once again he has accomplished that with five of the Gators non-conference opponents having made the NCAA tournament last season.
One thing the Gators should know is what kind of team they will have next year, and it shouldn’t take long with an early season match-up against Georgetown on the Carrier.
