It’s amazing how fast two months can fly by. Just a couple of months ago, Walter Pitchford and the Florida Gators men’s basketball team were surprising most experts in the NCAA Tournament.
But now, Pitchford has made an official recruiting trip to Nebraska. The 6-foot-10 big man freshman is expected to transfer to a team closer to Michigan to be closer to his ailing grandfather, according to sources with the Orlando Sentinel newspaper. There have been no reports at this time whether he will make official visits to teams in Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin or Minnesota.
After gaining just six points and four rebounds on the season, it is clear that there is little investment in this young man with the Florida Gators program.
Coming out of high school, Pitchford had official offers from George Washington University, Michigan and Minnesota. Ultimately, he ended up signing with DePaul until eventually backing out of his commitment to attend a prep school in East Lansing, MI, where he averaged 17.4 points, 9.5 rebounds and 4.5 blocks.
If he does indeed decide to transfer, Pitchford would have to sit out a transfer year at a Division I school, then have three years of remaining eligibility.
