Florida sophomore Brian Johnson and junior Preston Tucker were named to the Preseason Golden Spikes Award watch list on Thursday.
Johnson was a preseason All-America selection by Baseball America after earning several freshman All-American honors last year. Johnson was 6-4 on the mound in 14 starts, posting a 4.03 ERA while striking out 51 in 73 2/3 innings. As the Gators’ designated hitter in 27 games, Johnson batted .405 with 21 RBI, 13 runs, nine walks, five doubles, four home runs and two grand slams.
Tucker was also chosen as a preseason All-American by Baseball America, Collegiate Baseball and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association. Last season he hit .331 with 50 runs, 49 RBI, 43 walks, 17 doubles, 11 home runs and eight stolen bases. He was the 2009 SEC Co-Freshman of the Year.
The award, which is given to the top amateur player, will be given July 11 in Phoenix, Ariz.
