Breaking down Florida’s SEC Tournament seeding scenarios

For Florida to control it's own fate and grab a No. 2 seed in the SEC Tournament, it must beat top-ranked Kentucky on Sunday. (Photo by Mark Cornelison, MCT)

With one game to go in the regular season, Florida has yet to lock up its seed for the SEC Tournament. Heading into Sunday’s matchup vs. Kentucky, the Gators could be anywhere from a No. 2 to a No. 4 seed in New Orleans next week. There’s only a few ways they could get those seeds, and most scenarios depend on the result of the Vanderbilt at Tennessee game on Saturday.

So, here’s how I can all shake out for Florida:

No. 2 seed
How it happens: Florida beats Kentucky. That’s the only way to get the second seed and the outcomes of other games don’t matter.
Upside: As the No. 2 seed, Florida would avoid meeting Kentucky again until the tournament championship if it could get there.
Downside: Vanderbilt would be the No. 3 in that situation, potentially setting up a rematch between the Commodores and Gators in the quarterfinals.

No. 3 seed
How it happens:
Florida loss to Kentucky + Vanderbilt win over Tennessee.
Upside: Same as the No. 2 seed, Florida would avoid a matchup with Kentucky early in the tournament.
Downside: Again, since Vanderbilt would be the No. 2 seed, it could give Florida another matchup with a team that beat it this week in Nashville. Also, tipoff for the quarterfinal game for the No. 3 seed is at 10 p.m.

No. 4 seed
How it happens:
Florida loss to Kentucky + Tennessee win over Vanderbilt.
Upside: If Florida is the No. 4, that puts Tennessee (No. 2) and Vanderbilt (No. 3) on the other side of the bracket and helps UF avoid two teams that handed it three losses this year.
Downside: A potential matchup with Kentucky in the quarterfinals.
